2003 Roaring Reels Draws a Crowd
By Melanie Raskin, 21st Annual MCA-I Carolina Silver Reel Chair
We've come a long way since the roaring 20s: from speakeasies to wine bars, flappers to hip-hoppers, silent movies to talking (and exploding and morphing!) pictures, and (who would have believed it?!) winter to spring Silver Reels! (And in Chapel Hill, no less!)
Spring brings with it more than just sunshine and balmy temperatures. It brings an indomitable optimism too. That optimism was evident during our months working on Silver Reels. I’m thrilled with the overwhelming support for our media festival this year. This year we had more entries (102!), more sponsors (thank you all), more judges (Atlanta, Seattle and Minneapolis chapters), and more volunteers (we appreciate you). We’re honoring more outstanding programs–31 this year. Judges were more impressed with our work, as evidenced by the stiff competition and higher scores. And, best of all, we’re getting more from the weather. Forget the frigid temperatures and ice and snow of past Silver Reels; bring on the sunshine!
On Saturday evening, May 3, nearly 150 people gathered in the ballroom of the luxurious Carolina Club Alumni Hall for a feast for the senses–both culinary and artistic. With the Roaring 20s as the theme, complete with fun period signs, live piano music, and silent film clips with custom dialogue cards (of course, we couldn't resist!), guests were treated to the best media communications in North and South Carolina. Recognized by National MCA-I as one of the premiere regional awards events in the country, the festival honors an average 20 video programs a year. In this 21st year, the judges chose to honor seven productions with Silver Reels of Excellence and 24 productions with Silver Reels of Merit. Carolina MCA-I Silver Reel of Excellence ™ is our highest honor, awarded to productions judged to be exceptional forms of media communications. These programs display superior creativity, innovation, high production values and effective design. Carolina MCA-I Silver Reel of Merit ™ is awarded to productions judged to be outstanding forms of communications. These works display effective creativity, innovation, production values and design.
Bottom line? This year’s event was the bee’s knees. Thank you everyone for making this a year of “more.” More participation in MCA-I and Silver Reels means more opportunity for professional growth, more money for special programs, and, most important of all, more fun. Thank you sponsors for your financial commitment to our festival. Thank you volunteers for your hours producing a great event. And extra squeezes to my faithful, hard-working, exuberant Silver Reels Committee. These people worked and played well together: attending meetings, researching prices, hatching brilliant ideas, making phone calls, raising money, working with judges, managing entries, publicizing the event, and producing the show. You have them to thank for this year’s event: Jim Babel, Kaki Carl, Jonothon Demers, Monique De Rocher, Sue DiMaggio, Tilla Fearn, Bob and Kathy Gubar, Darren Ley, Eugene Murray, Jeff Raskin, Walt Rassel, Kevin Silva and Marjorie Strauss.
